Default Transmission Problems

So Im hoping to find some help on here. I was out on the highway and right away I started hearing some noises when I put the pedal down hard. I noticed my overdrive light was on and wont turn off meaning that it dont have my overdrive gear now.
So once in town i noticed my jeep wont make the shift into the normal gear its in when driving in town.
Coming to a stop and then going i can feel abit of a drag and it seems theres a good pause between gear change.
I still have my reverse and drive and first and second. So does this mean i just lost my overdrive gear, or is my tranny completely crashing on me. Any adivse will help alot
Thanks

sounds like limp in mode... when you slow down does it shift back to 1st gear, or does it stay in the higher gear and take forever to get back up to speed...
do the obvious, check the fluid level, top up if need be, check for leaks...
was there any signs of trouble before this happened?

has the check engine light come on?

if its a WJ 99-04 do key on, off, on, off, on and check for codes...

checked the fluids before hitting the highway and they were good. checked when i got home after the problems occured and its high. no check engine light and yea when you slow down and come to a stop it takes a few seconds to switch into first gear. it kind of jumps into first gear

You have my sympathies on that one. I was driving highway speed with my 93 and without any warning, it was like the trans. went into neutral, played around with the shifter, and it seemed to go back into gear. after about 10 k. of driving it barely pulled itself (in any gear) into the shop. we put a used, rebuilt a few years ago trans. in it. hopefully it will last a while. I love my old jeep, but they are expensive to run.... Enough about me.... If your trans. looks overfull. Most definetly check that the cooler in the rad hasn't failed, (thats about the only place any more fluid can come from.). and is letting coolant into the trans. aparently as I was told by a x chrysler mechanic, jeep owner. anti freeze will kill your trans. real quick..... Good luck and keep us posted...
