front drive shaft
Good day, new member here. I am trying to help my nephew out, he has a 1998 Grand Cherokee Limited. The CV joint on the front drive shaft is worn out and he can't afford a new one right now. Is it possible to remove the front drive shaft and still drive it until he can afford a new one? It has the Quadra-Trac system.
Thanks in advance for any info.

Re: front drive shaft
Yes, it is possible to remove the front ds without problems, and then leave the tc in 2wd so the front half will be disconnected. If he has the rzeppa/rzeppa style, then there are 6 bolts on either end. The tc side of drive shaft should pop up and out of the flange, and then you can separate the front flange from the shaft. You'll need to lift it up on jack stands, and you may need a good load of liquid wrench or PB blaster. Mine was pretty well stuck when I replaced it, and took a lot of persuasion...good luck.

Re: front drive shaft
Sorry bout that... I did a little more looking, and it should be fine for your 249 transfer case. The older 249's ('93-'95) are problematic, but the newer 249's ('96-'98) are fine to temporarily remove the front shaft without destroying the viscous coupler...(according to the gurus at Jeepforum.com)
