Default Tranny problems

I took the tranny from my 97 gc and put it into a 98. On a short test drive it shifted fine into 1st,2nd & 3rd then seemed to keep flipping back and forth between 3rd and OD. The fluid got very hot and now it is stuck in forward no matter where the shifter is. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the info!
I got the tranny shifting again, turns out the shift cable came out of the bracket and when the shifter was in park it pulled the cable tight so it looked as though it was locked in.
Now when I put it into gear it wants to stall and in reverse when you give it some gas it does not want to move(engine doesn't even rev). In drive it still wants to stall just not as bad and when you give it gas it works.
I borrowed a scan tool but the are no codes in the PCM, am I looking for a code?

I have a '94 Laredo that won't shift down when coming to a stop at a highway intersection. It begins to buck and I have to either shift into neutral or down shift manually or it will stall. I think this may have something to do with the engine speed as after it warms up it idles at about 1400 rpm. any ideas?
