Canada 01 Grand Cherokee Overheating

Hi everyone, I am writting from Toronto. I just joined this group as I am a Jeep owner, I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 6 Cyl.
I haven't have many problems with it and I am quite happy.

I am having a problem with the cooling fan not working. The last time this happened was 2 years ago and I took it to the dealership and it was costly, over $1,000 and they replaced the relay & cooling fan assembly.

It is not working now and I am not taking it back again. I am told that it could be either part that was replacd.

My question is, why do we have to stick to the same parts ? I noticed that there is enough room and a tread where the driving belts are that could fit a regulard "fan blade" but nobody seems to understand I want to do this.

Where can I get help on this? or can I find the part (fan blade) to install?

This is how cars used to be cooled off years ago until some smart engineer decided to use this electric motors that are crap.

Your comments will be apreciated.

Cheers!

Miguel

The fan relays are temperrmental sometimes and will last forever or a week, kind of a crap shoot with them, you can put a mechanical fan on, the factory tow package consisted of the electric fan and a mechanical fan.
You can check the auto wreckers, NAPA, places like that or even on line to get a clutch and fan assembly.
The mechanical fan may not provide enough cooling on it's own as the WJ's were designed with the electric fan as the main. If you want to make it easier to get at the relay, it's directly under the passenger side headlight on top of the frame rail. Most people use a hole saw and then you can reach in and disconnect it. Much cheaper than having the mechanics do it for you.

Hi and thanks for the reply.
I removed the passenger side head light and YES there is a cut already there as this was replaced at the dealership 2 years ago.

The part is only $80.00 so I will replace it. Hopefully this is what caused the fan to stop working....it's an easy job since the mecanics at the dealership already cut it.

If it does keep dying on you there are various writeups online on how to convert the fan over to an electric fan from a ford taurus, larger fan for more cooling and fits very well if you don't mind doing some modding to your jeep.

Hello again, the fan relay went again on my GC. I replaced it in the morning and in the afternoon it wasn't working again. I've told it is the fan motor that has probably crapped out.
I will replace both tomorrow but any feedback will be great!

Cheers!

Other than moral support from a distance not to much feedback to give you.
What conditions are you driving in?
Ever take it through deep water?
Have you found/ installed a mechanical fan yet?
Just trying to think of somethings that may be causing the problem.

Something else to try, replace the 15 Amp fuse in the fusebox and try switching the 40 Amp in the box under the hood with another one to see if it's the motor or the fuse block.
