I need some answers about jeeps
im looking into buying a 4.0l 1993 jeep cherokee 5 speed... country edition. The body looks in pretty damn good condition except for a few rust dots literally like a dime big along the bumpers and side skirts. The wheel alignment, and oil was just changed. A new water pump, new tires a year ago and had tranny fixed a year ago. Inside is like mint condition. ...
But what i really want to know is how long is this jeep going to last it already has 240xxxkms on it. Are jeep parts cheaper compared to say toyotas? Are they hard to work on?
Hows modding for them? is gas milage pretty crappy or not bad? I would like to make a pretty badass 4x4 out of it.
All my buddies have toyotas and say i should get one but im leaning more to jeeps plus this jeep sounds like a good deal... anyone got some info though for me?

Jeep are easy to work on. Get a good repair manual. Price for parts are not to expensive. Check that rear frame by the gas tank they rot out there,no matter how god the body is. As for how long it will last depends on how you drive and maintain it. milage ok untill you lift and bigger tires. it is a Jeep thing
Scotty,
Get new buddies! I had a '94 country (auto). She's the only reason I bought Muriel (2000GC Ltd.). VERY easy to work on and had nearly 400K reliable, virtually trouble free Km on her when I sold her (body was ill). Speaking of which, check out the floors/rocker panels/subframe rails VERY carefully. That's where Cha-Cha rotted out. They use lots of salt on the roads here.
Can't comment on the price of parts compared to Toyota's or the mod' possibilities (someone on here should be able to give you info on the mod's).
I averaged 20 mpg combined city/highway over the 200K I put on her. The 4.0l engine is pretty well bullet proof as far as I'm concerned and has a pile of torque.
There's a lot of talk about Jeeps being trouble prone. I have not found this to be true and who cares. the joy of Jeep'n FAR, FAR outweighs any and all problems. Keep her well maintained and you're good to go.
Am I biased? Hell yes! Would I buy a foreign built 4X4 (no, I'm NOT racist in any way)-nope. The family has owned numerous (probably at least 30) foreign cars in the last 40 years or so but for a 4X4, I'd stick with a Jeep. Actually our son has a 2000 GC laredo and he loves it. Trust me Scotty, He drives his a LOT harder than I do mine and his is standing up well.
Welcome to Jeeps Canada.
Peter.

My self I have a 1990 cherokee limited it's got 350000 and is still going strong this is my second cherokee with the 4.0L and I will never regret it and they make awesome offroad rigs I went place in my 94 sport 5speed 4.0L ho that bigger more powerful trucks couldn't touch. I love them with my sport I could drive about 500Km on 3/4 of a tank at about 130km/hr.
