Default drivetrain issue

I'm hoping one of the members can help me out here. I just picked up a 1989 Cherokee for parts for a $100. It runs pretty good, but when it's in 2wd or 4lo and you turn the wheels all the way in either direction, the rear tire chirps and it pushes against the front axle. Works fine in 4PT. I haven't had the chance to take it out on the highway yet, but the previous owner told me that it has a wobble at highway speed. The Jeep has a Dana 44 with limited slip. Before I go tearing the rear axle apart, does anyone have any advice to save me some time and effort?
