I picked up a 2002 Jeep Liberty Sport with a 3.7L and 4X4 in the spring. I was wondering if anyone has installed a "chip" to aid in the increase of fuel economy.

Which brand you would suggest I purchase to increase my fuel economy. I do not do a lot of off-roading and very rarely tow anything.

Don't bother with the chip.
Increase your tune up by fresh spark plugs, run a bottle of chevron Techron in your gas at next highway run. New air-filter- Remove the IAC (air intake control) motor and clean the IAC and ports. Get the throttle body spray cleaner and get it sparkling inside.
Go up to 4 lbs above door sticker -of psi on your tires and check regularly. Get front wheel alignment.
Dont use stock SRA-ST-Crap tires they are unsafe.

 

What is unsafe about the SRT-ST?

 

Anything worse than dry pavement and light throttle pressure and you will find out really quick how crappy those tires are.

 

I wouldn't even use SRA-ST tires for a tire swing!

If you are considering "Chip tuning" a KJ, just a chip will not do.
You will also need an upgraded throttle body, as well as having
the PCM flashed (Power Control Module ) to take advantage of the
chip as the factory PCM will "Relearn" and reset itself to the factory
specification/programming.
If you commit to all of the aforementioned mods, you may as well
buy a set of JBA headers to take advantage of all the other parts.
Then there is upgrading the exhaust system...
But then you also HAVE to use Premium fuel
or your engine will not benefit from those modifications.
Then, at the end of the day... If you pick up 21 hp extra, you will
be lucky!

 

You guys must be real aggressive drivers,I just came off snows and put ST`s back on as summer tires and to be honest I can`t see what the problem is with the ST`s.
I have been driving in heavy rain and light snow for the last month and have not noticed this tire to be "borderline dangerous" and have not lost traction and thats in 2wd.
Opened up the cottage last weekend and of course the country roads were heaving somewhat with the frost and thaw and the ST`s managed to get through with no issue.
I can see these tires not beiing a good choice for back road driving but for city driving the are fine.

 

I have 2 Libertys that both came new with the ST's, easily the crappiest tires I have ever used and I have to agree with the "borderline dangerous" evaluation. If you don't mind the ST's traction (lack of), then you will be pleasantly suprised by the difference when you put some real shoes on it.

 

Ya I had my Jeep 3 days with SRA-ST, and the first wet hill on road I could not get traction.
If I tried to stop quickly the jeep went for a slide. Just dont use or rely on the stock tires, they are crap.
So on day 4 I bought GY Wrangler Silent Armors' and soon after Luke bought some too for winter.

The Silent Armors are kevlar belted in tread and Have thick sidewalls are strong & "good" off road.
Ryan runs MTR's Which are Kevlar tread & sidewall.These are the "best" for off road & awesome grip and of course look uber cool on the KJ.

Really the words fuel mileage and Jeep Liberty do not belong in the same sentence. Ryan say he gets 22 Mpg with the MTR's. Removing weight helps and easy on the pedal, but I just drive it and fill it, and when you need a 4x4 on a snowy day or when camping etc, You are reminded you are in a strong lifted vehicle and fuel mileage really is secondary. A Prius gets good gas mileage, want to take it off road?

 

Everybody keeps saying the stock tires are crap, I just don`t see it frankly.
I drove home yesterday evening in very heavy rain in 2 wheel drive with out any hint of traction loss.
You guys must be very aggressive with the gas and brake pedal.

 

You must not be a very good driver then if you don't feel how shitty those tires really are!
