Chrysler is showing three concepts that leverage the automaker's ENVI electric vehicle tech tech today in Detroit. The Chrysler ccoVoyager and Dodge ZEO concepts will be covered in separate posts, but they share their main electric drivetrains with Jeep's open-air concept. At the center of ENVI is a 200 kW (268 hp) electric motor with a 40 mile range that's powered by lithium ion batteries. The Renegade concept uses a pair of these -- one on each axle to create a proper 4X4 -- and adds a low gear mode, locking differentials, and a Bluetec diesel "range-extender" engine that gives it the equivalent of 110 mpg when combined with the electric motors. We see a little of the 1998 Jeepster Concept in the Renegade's front end, but beyond that, the little two-seater goes its own way, putting a modern spin on the Wrangler ethos that incorporates environmental sustainability into the overall equation without sacrificing the brand's off-road roots and identity. You can read Chrysler's full press release on the Renegade after the jump.

BLUETEC diesel Range Extended Electric Vehicle in fun, open-air, sustainable design package
A B-segment Jeep® concept vehicle, the Renegade is a sporty, "minimized" two-seater ideally suited for the all-weather fun of dune-surfing or rock-crawling.
"With an electric motor powering each axle, the Jeep Renegade concept is designed for a 'hang on and have fun experience,'" said Tony Shamenkov, Jeep Renegade concept principal exterior designer.
Constructed of environmentally responsible materials, sustainability is a key theme of the Jeep Renegade concept.
Renegade is targeted at customers in the "Stylish Green" segment of the marketplace – those who are extremely environmentally oriented, appreciate high-tech and innovation, and enjoy performance combined with style in keeping with their "green" attitude.

Re: New Jeep Renegade Concept
Immediate impression: wow, pretty cool looking, definitely not the typical, versatile Jeep though. 2 seats? What is this a "Sports Jeep"?
I think it definitely looks pretty intriguing, but they better come up with some feasible cover for the doors and everything (obviously automatic they probably already have something nice). The engine definitely seems interesting, and I can't wait to hear/see more details about this beast.

Re: New Jeep Renegade Concept
Wow.... I gotta admit for trying to merge the Car + Jeep concept i like it! Kinda goes against the norm of "sleek" cars, but at the same time its not a "box". Thumbs up to this as long as the body panels can take a couple of dings.

Re: New Jeep Renegade Concept
Greetings,
Can't get the links to work (cut and paste). Without seeing the vehicles first thing that came to mind is WTF???? Stylish Green segment of the marketplace? Aw c'mon. The tree huggers should all be driving Prius's.
Where do these people think the electricity comes from to charge up these things? Well, it comes from the wall outlet just like beef, chicken and pork come from the grocery store. Try coal fired generating plants! When the batteries wear out, they're TOXIC waste! Cadmium, litium, mercury etc.
I'm all for a clean environment and major advances in automotive technology have really cleaned up emmisions and I'm positive things will be even better in the future but putting the noble Jeep badge on a cutsey, fartsy electric car just doesn't do it for me.
There's no substitute for cubic inches.
OK, rant's over.
Peter

Re: New Jeep Renegade Concept
^^ I'm with you there ^^
Green cars are just another environmental disaster waiting to happen.
But it would be a pretty neat buggy if it was ruggedized and came with a normal motor.
