ya 2.5s are ok. old site i had a pic of my buddys 2004 4x4 1 ton deisel stuck and i pulled him out.
and you buy what you can some times as what you want you wont find untill you either cant afford it or you dont need it.

well more power would be great as would the use of 5 gaer again i have to say I have kicked the sh*t out that pour little motor ,more then once bounced it off the rev limter

i her that. and i use 5th gear all the time. unless its weather liek to day with 80km winds then i go home threw town

Honestly if I had straight drive shafts on the Frog, it would do 100K with the 38's, it all comes down to gearing. I know the 2.5L can be made to do it no problem for 33's.

the reasons to buy one vehicle and do a motor swap right away are limitless, good body vs bad body being my first guess and the price being right on the 2.5

the things you need to ask yourself are what your plans will be for the jeep!!
more power is greatand BIG T loves those 4 poppers my 4unner had the 2.4 with 38.5 tsls and was gutless as all hell period, now if you plan to go 33's and mild wheeling i betting you wont do to bad and by mild i mean open diffed as soon as its locked you will notice a HUGE power loss when in 4WD.
but weight all the options, add more power for bigger tires, and then you axles become a time bomb, and lets be serious the d30 and d35 are great for boat anchors and scrap when its high enough, other wise not the best choice for high power and big tires! so once you swap in a 4.0 which to me is pointless, if your gonna motor swap anyway put something in that wont over heat ever 35 seconds lol they are good motors, true, but like rob said then why not buy one with it already, if your gonna motor swap swap something new and exciting ok maybe not new but exciting,
id base my motor pic off of what axles you can find! if you find a d44 and 9 in out of a old bronco or something then i would go 302 for high out put c4 or c6 and a 205 case, if ya find chevy axles then a vortec style 305 or 350, if ya got a bit more cash the new ls series 4.8, 5.3 or 6.0 lots of power and trans options are limitless th350 th400, 700r4 4l60e 4l65e 4l80e etc and cases 203 205(203 only in a doubler situation) and any of the factory cases all have decent low range gears in them, the vortec is a basic (ish) swap if your good at wiring or for 700US painless wiring will do all the hard work ( i have the part number if ya went this route) the ls series engine become a bit more involved having the drive by wire TB on them, some companies make a conversion to the old cable style TB now but its pricey

it all comes down to what you have planned for this rig and ONLY YOU can answer that, i suggest a long thought process if you full intend on going 38in plus tires then your gonna be putting much larger axles under it regardless, so personally if it were me, id go small block right from the get go, unless your made of money try to do each mod ONCE by planning ahead..if the motor is a strgon runner run it as long as you can and upgrade axles first, then tires, then when you hate the lack of power make you decision from there on motor- if you want a mall crawler re gear the diffs and call it a day
