Good motor for a jeep?

Hey guys. I'm just getting my first jeep this weekend, always wanted one.
It's a '95 YJ 2.5L 4cylinder.
Now I assume, given the size of the vehicle, that wouldn't provide the best power. So I started reading about it, and quite a few people don't speak positively about the 2.5L engine, saying it doesn't provide enough power and leads to some problems.

So I was curious, what would be a good motor to put in it? Another guy was telling me about how he put a v8 in his Jeep, which would obviously be a power house but I don't need anything like that :P :P And I'd like to make it to the gas station before my tank runs empty...

What would be a good motor to put in a Jeep?

Hi Jacob_22

2.5L are great reliable engines. Easy to work on and cheap parts. They are build that way for driving around town/highway with stock tire sizes. Change the use, you may want to change performance. 38" tires in waist deep mud you may want a V8. 33" driving on the road to go for a day trip on a trail, maybe a 2.5L with lower gears would work for you. Most people speak pourly of the 2.5L becuase who in there right mind would own a Jeep and keep the 195/70R15 tires on it they come with. They jamb 31" under it and then wonder where there gas milage and power went? Good Luck and post some pic's went you get a chance.

I find that the 2.5 with 33" tires hasn't got the power to push through deep mud. 4.0 is what I have in my 91' with 33x12.5 and it hasn't failed me yet, even with mud over the bumper.

Look for a 90s yj thats running but cheep and has a 4.0 and do the swap gas tank and drive train. You will not be disapointed.

i have a 2.5 in my jeep. it has 31" tires and needs help. i think you should get the gears in the diffs right for the size tire and then look at hp. i like the other suggestions to use a 4.0l swap. let me know what you decide! cheers!!

My question here would be, Why would you buy the truck if the first thing you are planning to do is get another and swap its motor into this one, why not just get a 4.0L to start?
