Default Going for some winter tire? Do i need to change my spare?

Hi everyone,

I want to put some winter tires on my Wrangler 2012 Artic.

Right now it has stock tires 255/75/17. Choice is really limited in this size so looking into 265/70/17 tires, a lot more choices.

Only concern, technically tires will be a bit smaller, so it means my spare will be bigger !!!

Should I change my spare as well ?

spare tire is only to get you from point A ( flat location ) to point B ( repair location or home )
I would not change the spare as well. Unless you have a extra rim.
are you JUST doing the rubber? or new rims & rubber?

Cypher,

Kevin is correct, your spare is generally meant for temporary use although with the Wrangles, we stay with tradition and mount the full matching spare with wheel.
Again, if you are just doing tires, there is no need unless you want them all to match or like Kevin also noted, if your are replacing the wheel as well. At that point, why not go the extra mile and match em all up.
If you are looking to get winter wheels, go to the link below and you'll see what is available for your Arctic.

Good Luck!

Buy 4 only and use yer current spare.... but if you need it use it only till the flat is fixed. I have not had a flat in over 10 years. KCCO.

Depends on if you keep these new tires on longer than winter. Conventional wisdom with a full-sized spare is to include all 5 tires in the rotation. Get a lot better bang for your buck that way, also your spare tire is basically sitting there unused and will dry rot due to exposure over time. Plus, it's a Jeep, your spare should be able to get you out of any situation and not just "limp home"

My tire guy's long term saying has always been " As long as it's only one size bigger/smaller - your good". Meaning in old days if you ran F's, E's or G's were good - but there likely isn't anybody out there who can still remember what I'm referring to! lol. Metricly speaking as long as you stay with in 10 mm's +/- your okay. So 255 to 265 will meet that criteria, but we're talking long term usage, as a spare the obvious object is to get you off the side of the road to a repair shop. Winter tires use a softer rubber compound which wears rapidly if used daily on dry pavement so long term usage (beyond winter) is just of waste of good money/tires.
