Question Are XJ and TJ axle shafts the same?

Just wondering if anybody can tell me if D30 & D35c axle shafts from an XJ will work in a D30 & D35c on a TJ? Are they the same length and diameter for the seals, axles & bearings? I got the set of shafts out of a '91 Xj with abs and no CAD, the front stub shafts use the same 760x ujoints as my TJ.

yes and no.xj front shafts from 96 and up are the same as tj.older models will fit but have smaller u-joint.rear axle early xj d35 have bolt in axles tj are c clip.later model xj may have c clip d35 or chrysler 8.25. the c clip axles out of xj or yj d35 should fit the tj.early xj had 1 and 2 piece axle shafts on p side depending on model others had cv style axle joints which should be avoided

Thanks for the reply, I'm guessing the axles are out of a newer XJ than I thought because they have the larger u joints and the rear axles were out of a Dana 35 with the C clips.

they should fit. if the unit bearings are ok you should leave them on your spare shafts because the big nut that holds the axle tight to the unit bearing is hard to remove with a broken axle .you just change everything.make sure you have a 12 point 1/2"wrench and a chisel and big hammer, the only tools you need to change front axle on the trail

The unit bearings were toast, had to use the slide hammer to get them out with a little help from a BFH.

I have just found out that although the axles from a late model XJ will indeed work in a TJ with the same D30 & D35c differentials, the actual diameter and stoutness of the TJ axles are very different than that of the XJ. The XJ, built originally as a grocery getting family SUV has very weak axle shafts compared to that of the TJ. I will post some Pics so you can see what I mean.
