Default Soft top confusion

We are looking to purchase a used OEM soft top for our 2005 Jeep TJ but have conflicting opinions that only 2003-2006 will fit.
Others are saying 1997-2006 original soft tops will fit??

Please tell me the truth.

From what I gather, they can all be made to work, but there were some changes in the windows and hardware that might affect fit, form and function for you. I'd be looking for an OEM for your particular model year to avoid potential headaches upon install and down the road. Might not make a diff in the desert, but when it's raining or snowing it might. And make sure you get all the hardware. Ask me how I know ;?(.
