mileage truth

I am looking at purchasing a 4 cylinder TJ, for other reasons as well but with the price of gas these days, Mileage is important to me. I have read many reviews. Some are good and some are not. What is the truth? What can I expect from TJ in mileage (stock because I want the best mileage).

I have a 03 tj 6cy manuel, originally stock, the mileage was good as expected speed limit on the roads, no jack rabbit starts, mostly highway compared to my friends gutless 96 yj 4cy manuel we were very close to the same mpg. I wonder why anyone wants to buy a jeep if he never intents to run it offroad. You want great mpg buy some small foreign car and make 40mpg plus which u will never get with a jeep. I cannot compare now as its modified and my mpg suck, but that was my choice. For long trips your not pushing the pedal all the time to keep it rolling at the limit and that extra is there if you need it for passing or emergency.Your choice Good Luck

4cylinder, to 6 cylinder is virtually the same mileage. If you want mileage, buy a Neon, or a Civic. You will not be happy with a JEEPs mileage. For fun factor, you can't beat a JEEP.

A jeep has the aerodynamics of a brick ....

I commute 150km daily in my 99' TJ with the 4.0L. Sucks gas like a pig ... but I wouldn't trade it for a thing.

my 97 with the little 4 banger auto is great on gas, until I go off road or tow my boat or drive like a maniac( which I do sometimes that's why I bought a Jeep) and compared to my 86 oldsmobile it is by far 3 times better on fuel.

Of Course like some have replied to me, if I was only interested in mileage I would be looking at a neon. I want to play also and already have a use for a 4 X 4. Presently I have a pickup but find I don't need a pickup that bad. Think a utility trailer would haul grass clippings to the dump once a month.

We weren't atytempting to be rude, JEEP culture as a whole knows that JEEPs don't have good mileage. If you are used to full/mid size pickups, then a JEEP is in line for you.

the 4 Cyl manual Trans. is not too bad on gas - And gas is still so cheap in Northamerica, that I don't even think about it.

My 98 Sahara has an inline 6, I'm lucky to get 300 kms per tank and I drive like an old man.(I think the tank is 49 liters)
