Gear ratios and fuel
New to the forum, adictive, just like all things Jeep.
Thinking of a compromise...TJ, even a 4 banger for daily commute, which is 65Kms each way along the 401 in Southern Ont...stop and go to say the least.
Any thoughts on the rear end ratio to help fuel consumption, maybe keep the tire size "mild' too?
Thanks

I think I'd go with the 4.0L I6 for highway driving, get a 5 speed manual for that tall O/D. Alot of the 6 cylinder models came with a 3.07:1 axle ratio. Keep it well tuned and keep the tire size as close to stock as possible for the best gas mileage.

I agree. the 4 banger and the 4L get about the same gas mileage believe it or not. I've owned both with 4"lifts, 33-12.50s and 4:11 gears and they got the same gas mileage the only difference is you can use 5th gear in the 4L.
I wud still look towards a 4.11 gearing even if its on a d30 & 35, even better wud be a d44. As later on you may just want to do some serious offroading and then have to change ur axles(or regear) as I am looking into now, sucks the 3.07's for offroading with 33's and the d30/35's are not actually strong enuff to go put a locker in. But if ur not interested in playing in the mud then stick with the 3.07's
Great info, thanks, helps narrow the search!
Assume the I6 and a manual trans as the 'default' choice, anyone know of a site or link that would help know the various options...meaning 5 or 6 speed, Dana 30/35/50, gearing...what was offered over the build life of the TJ. (in light of not having a sales brochure for each model year)
Allways good to know more about the vehical then the sales staff.
