Default gas tank size

would anyone know the size of the fuel tank for a 97 tj sport?

Acording to Wikipedia, the TJ didn't have a standard size tank (19 U.S. gallons; 72 L; 16 imp gal) until 99. I am thinking that mine might only be a 15 gal (us) which only gives me 12.5 gal (imperial).

Since i don't usually wait for the gas gauge light to come on i don't know what the tank holds.

so even at 12 gal, @ 17 mpg, that would give me a range of approx 325 km per tank. Which is what i get normally. I guess it would be just easier to pay more attention to how much i am putting into the tank at fillups!

would i be able to swap out the smaller tank for the larger one?

okay i found out for sure that i only have a 15 gal (US) tank, but checking car-parts.com it is giving the option of a 15 or 19 gal tank. is this meaning that i can swap out the 15 for a 19? if so can my stock parts "plug into" the 19 gal tank connectors? or can i still use my stock items? fuel pump, level sending unit, etc.

The 15 gal tank and the 19 gal tank are the same the only difference is the length of the vent tube inside the tank. On the 15 gal tank the vent tube is longer and it stops the pump from filling the tank to 19 gal. Do a Google search for "tj 15 gal to 19 gal" and you should find lots of info on how to mod your vent tube. You basically have to drop the tank remove the fuel pump assembly, reach inside and cut the vent tube down to about 1.5 inches, put it all back together and you have a 19 gal tank. The gauge will read full for a lot longer because it is calibrated to 15 gal but it will work fine once it comes off full.
