Re: coil pack problem

They should not have to back probe anything. Any misfire information will show on their scan tool's datastream. Also a misfire that common and that often would trigger a code and probably start the check engine light flashing for a catalyst damaging misfire. I'd take a spray bottle and spray the coil pack and plug boots as best you can with water. See if it changes your idle quality or arcing is present.
good luck and let us know how it goes.

First of all stop going to the Stealership, Go anywhere but crappy tire and the stealership. Find somebody with a code reader that knows how to use it or go and get one yourself. Check the internet, if its happened to you it probably has happened to other people as well.

Re: coil pack problem

I think instead of a code reader, you'll need a proper scan tool with running datastream and possibly a lab scope. The datastream only shows what the computer thinks it's seeing. The lab scope shows exactly what is happening in real time. As long as the PCM thinks everything is OK, it'll run poorly but never set a code.
Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Re: coil pack problem

Any garage worth its weight in salt will have these. Diagnostics can be expensive as you know, so if you have a trade college nearby with an automotive program, call and see if they'd look at it. The advance level students are often needing project vehicles to practice diagnostic work and the instructors are usually incredibly knowledgable and right there to help. Probably a better and cheaper way to go than the stealership.
Good luck.
