It sounded like you were describing a broken overdrive gear. I
believe rebuilding it is your only option, as the input and output
shafts are different than the AX-15:

remanufactured AX5. Ouch!

Check with a local (not a chain!) rebuilder. You might also
call/email Sooner Jeep - they rebuild a lot of trannies. Not
necessarily the cheapest place around, but they were helpful and
pretty up front when I bought a re-built AX15 from them.
