YJ spings
Jeep in question is an 89 YJ SOA, 1"shackle lift, stock axles, 33x12.5's.
Softtop, half doors. 95K miles.
We all knew that when I went SOA, I would destroy my stock spring packs.
They were pretty much toast before I started, so I picked up another
complete set. I am about to get my hands on another good set. The set I have
yet to get apparently has all perfect main leafs. The extra set I all ready
have has all "decent" main leafs. My plan is to cut the spring eyes off of
the main leafs from the first set of spares, and add those main leafs to the
second set of stock spring packs. This would result in a 6-leaf pack.
The extra main is to help fight spring wrap and sagging. I also need to get
longer bumpstops. Will the added main do the trick?
I was checking out my stock packs today.. the front only have 4 leafs, and
the rear has 5. The first used set I have are all 5 leaf packs. I need to
gain a tiny amount of clearance on the passenger front for the drag link
below the spring. Can I cut one of the small bottom leafs to the legnth of
the spring perch and add it to the packs to accomplish this? Will it stiffen
the packs? Can I use two of the above to gain a little height in the rear (I
don't like the sagging rear look). I would just switch the front and rear
packs, but I don't know which are which.
As an alternative, I have considered buying Rubicon 1.5" SOA lift springs..
but I think it is too late for that without buying a new rear driveshaft,
re-setting my pinion angle, and re-doing the front end. Is it too late for
those springs? How about the no-lift SOA springs? Are they worth
"spring-ing" (ha ha) for?

One more thing I forgot to mention.. A friend mentioned that I could get
more flex if I cut the spring clamps off. Is this true? Won't this allow the
springs to slide laterally?
