YJ Axle Shift Motor

Re: YJ Axle Shift Motor
Sorry 87 YJ
I actually applied full vacuum to the diaphram tonight and then
reconnected the whole works it seems to have cleared up the wobble to
some degree, I should have also mentioned that I just did a 1" body
lift on the vehicle but I had noticed this the day before I did the
lift but it has happened in the past where it seemed to lock then
release after a bit of driving. The steering is a lot better now but I
still notice that slight resistance on slow tight corners and I'm
suspecting it may have something to do with the lift and the length of
the streering shaft to the power steering pump.

Re: YJ Axle Shift Motor
Thanks I noticed the long url and cut and past it... Hmmmm $170 US
.....maybe I will try to get this old stock one cleaned up and working
properly. I was thinking of maybe buying a new vac harness for the
axle shift motor and pulling off the motor and cleaning it up.

In a Google search I saw a Jeepster but that may have been a long time

Re: YJ Axle Shift Motor
You didn't say what year or model, there are some differences.
Pressure switch on the firewall sorta indicates '87 to '90 YJ
Wrangler.
First off, don't worry about the front axle being continuouisly
engaged, all of the TJ's ('97 and later) run that way all the time.
The shift motor is vac pulled each way, in and out. The 4wd
pressure switch and the 4wd light are quite reliable, if the
light works and responds, things are usually all right in the
axle. In fact, the light will not go out until the axle disengages.
The really shaky part of all this is the vac lines and the switch
on the transfer case. ($35 and $15 respectively)
So if all that works, I have to ask what makes you think it is
locked in 4wd? The only thing that can be broken and give you
this particular set of symptoms is the shift fork inside the
shift motor. 4 bolts and you can inspect it.

You didn't say what year or model, there are some differences.
