I have seen cars drive off the road and be completely submerged, in a
canal or lake, and the headlights continue shining under water for
quite some time - I don't think the water will carry that small amount
of current enough to affect you immediately - that said, if the water
gets that high, you are probably screwed anyway! LOL

One can very eaisly waterproof the battery by having it in a
waterproof container.. with sealed lid and sealed passages for the
wire..
