Will a Cherokee tranny cooler fit a TJ?
Hi All,
I had asked the group a question about transmission coolers earlier, but
nobody replied. No problem, I am going to ask another question regardless.
I have checked with the local dealer and according to him there is no such
thing as a transmission cooler for a Wrangler. Thinking laterally, we
found a transmission cooler for a Cherokee (part number 82204191), the
question is, would this fit a TJ? Dealer couldn't confirm either way, as
they had none in stock to look and see. Pricewise, this one from dealer
would be equivalent of about USD 75.
I was hoping that some experts here would be able to answer this. Or, am I
better off with a B&M transmission cooler instead. If yes, which one the
16,000 GVW unit or the 24,000 GVW unit?
Thanks in advance for your time and comments.

Re: Will a Cherokee tranny cooler fit a TJ?
Are you running really hot or towing?
The Jeep already has a tranny cooler/heater setup through part of the
radiator.
I helped a friend put an auxiliary cooler in a YJ and he just got one of
those generic tow package coolers for $25.00 or so and snap tied it to
the rails in front of the rad.
I 'highly' doubt a cooler for an XJ will come even close to fitting.
The rads are totally different size and configuration.
Oh, isn't your TJ more like 5000 lb GVW? My CJ7 is 4250. 'Legally'
here in North America we can only up that by 2000 additional lb with a
trailer. Those ones listed sound like serious overkill.

Re: Will a Cherokee tranny cooler fit a TJ?
if you already have the tranny cooler sitting around, just dry fit it in
front of your rad for a look see. For the most part tranny coolers are NOT
vehicle specific all you need is enough room for it to fit. I know of a few
classic/muscle car guys who use smaller tranny coolers for engine oil
coolers.

front of your rad for a look see. For the most part tranny coolers are NOT
vehicle specific all you need is enough room for it to fit. I know of a few
classic/muscle car guys who use smaller tranny coolers for engine oil
coolers.

Re: Will a Cherokee tranny cooler fit a TJ?
if you already have the tranny cooler sitting around, just dry fit it in
front of your rad for a look see. For the most part tranny coolers are NOT
vehicle specific all you need is enough room for it to fit. I know of a few
classic/muscle car guys who use smaller tranny coolers for engine oil
coolers.

I have used the B & M "stacked plate" coolers on a couple of vehicles
and have been very happy with the results. They are much more
efficient than your typical looped tube cooler. I would install the
biggest one that will fit if you do serious off-roading. You can
always slip a piece of sheet metal or cardboard over it in winter. or
better yet - install a thermal bypass valve and it will self regulate.
Overcooling the tranny fluid in winter is NOT desireable, since
condensation in the fluid won't burn off and you may get corrosion.
Summit Racing is a great source and you will then get their _very_
cool big (non-Jeep) catalog every month.

I couldn't find a thermal bypass valve at the Summit website, but it's
in their catalog for sure.
