But it's a fact that should correct your assumption that because
they are Automatic Transmission Fluids they are the same. WRONG!

I assumed nothing, I simply know that any ATF will work in an NP231, it's
not as critical as in an automatic transmission. You probably don't want to
add Dexron if you have Type F, though. Chrysler's spec is Dexron, if I
remember correctly, but it's not critical if it's I, II or III.
I don't think they ever called for whale oil, but I bet it would work.
