Weird vibration

Does the drive shaft (front) rotate while in 2H, on a 95 YJ. I have
vibration in the steering wheel and shifter at highway speeds. When I
let off the acelerator, it stops. Thanks in advance.

Greg

Re: Weird vibration

Hi Greg,
The front driveshaft will rotate, even if the front axle disconnect is
working properly, via friction.
Usually it's a universal joint. You could have a bent driveshaft. Put it
up on a rack and see if you can find it.

Re: Weird vibration

Having said that, if the drive shaft is so bent as to cause a vibration in
2HI, odds favor it not spinning due to friction with the oil inside the
differential.

Bill is correct, the driveshaft _can_ turn as a function of friction between
the gears inside the diff, and the oil. But, the friction is not great,
which is a function of oil. Cold, extreme cold, might play a role in this,
but I doubt it.

Re: Weird vibration

Does the YJ have the axle disconnect like the older Cherokee? If so,
you can rule out the front drivetrain unless the disconnect isn't
disconnecting. You can check that by jacking up a tire and spinning it
to see if the driveshaft turns.

I had a high speed vibration that was hard to find on my 4.0. It turned
out to be a bad clutch on the rad fan. You can check it for slop with a
cold off engine or even with a hot off engine.

Hi Earle,
Really? I knew the XJ did away with the disconnect, but I thought the YJ
kept it thought the series. Now if someone would give me a YJ service
