Re: Vent tube for Dana 20 transfer case?
Jeff's talking about your transfer vent hose. Yours is probably
missing, as us mechanics almost never remember the small stuff when dropping a trans. Backup lights? You don't need no stinking backup light. Vent tube for Dana 20 transfer case?
While my Jeep was at the muffler shop last Saturday I had some time to
look under it quite a bit. I couldn't find any kind of breather/vent tube for the Dana 20 transfer case. Is it supposed to have one? If so, where? Near the top I'd guess, but on the back side or front side, driver's side or passenger side? Thank you. -- Travis http://jeepadventures.dyndns.org/jeep.html The meek shall inherit the earth. Re: Vent tube for Dana 20 transfer case?
You should be able to find the hose attached to the firewall somewhere near
the battery. If you follow the vent tube (hose) from the front axle up into the engine bay, you will find it has a small white one-way valve on it at the top. The tcase gets the same kind of hose and valve. From under the jeep, reach up to the higest point of the transfer case, just above the rear output shaft. You'll find a piece about 3/4" high with a loosely-attached, flat cover on it the size of a quarter. You can wiggle it but it won't come off. That's your vent, and there's one of the top of the transmission too. |

I was about to go crazy trying to understand where my tube from my battery that was tied in a knot around the front axle and hanging out of a spot on the transfer case had gone to and why it was supposed to be hooked up to the transmission through a t-fitting and split off to the valve stem on my rear passenger-side tire. :-P I wonder how much trouble it would be to replace the vents on the tranny and transfer case with tubes with the little vent fittings on the end so that I could go in some *really* deep water without worrying about getting water in the tranny and transfer case. I may not know all the history of this post, but here is what I know. A Dana 20 does not have a vent. It vents through the transmission. I have removed the transmission vent (little screen thingy) and plumbed it up to a high spot on my firewall. I did the same thing with the vents from my front and rear axils. |
