Had a similar problem on a '79 258, retorqued the intake manifold and
the squeal went away.

I've seen folks use canned ether and know it works. But, I just don't
feel comfortable blasting copious injections of ether onto a hot engine.
That can't just be me, can it?

Haha! My only ether-related story was when I was a kid. 18 years old
with a '69 Camaro (with uncapped headers) that an older guy helped me trick
out to the tune of 125mph in a quarter mile one night. Anyways, there I was
trying to get that heavily aspirated engine to crank to no avail.
I tried ether in the carb to wake it up. Needed it aperiodically and kept
a can in the back. It didn't work. I tried a little more. It didn't work.
So, I gave up and decided to look at the shifter cable...
Huh? What? The sun was going down all of a sudden and my Mom was asking
me how many hours I was gonna spend under that darned hot rod... Huh?
What?... NEXT TO THOSE FIST-SIZED PIPES I'D BEEN PUMPING ETHER THROUGH!!!

Use throttle body cleaner, works the same and is much less flamable.
Some folks also use propane.
