Unknown fluid leak!

Well after chasing many leaks on my 95 YJ, a new one has sprung. I am
getting two drops of fluid under the mid section. The bolts that secure
the seat belt clips to the floor have fluid on them and are dripping??
Are there brake lines in that vicinity that I cant see? It is not gear
or motor oil. I am thinking brake fluid but I don't know how the lines
are routed. I assume they are all routed through the frame rail.
Thanks, Greg

Re: Unknown fluid leak!

I suspect a spill too. Remember, although Jeep advertised that this vehicle
had "drain plugs" they don't actually drain the passenger compartment well.
If it is brake fluid you will be able to identify it by its distinctive feel
and smell, as well as by its amazing ability to dissolve paint. I suspect
that the "leak" is Coca-Cola, beer or coffee. ;^)

Hey Guys, I know its not a spill, I have no carpet in my Jeep. I cant
figure out for the life of me what the heck it is. Anyway, thanks for
the input. Maybe its seat belt oil ;)

Re: Unknown fluid leak!

Ok....

Brake fluid under pressure can squirt a long ways, but that will have an
effect on the pedal or the fluid level in the reservoir. The lines are
outside the frame rails.

The pedal should slowly sink under your foot and the fluid in the master
must be going down.

The brake light is also supposed to come on when it sees a pressure loss
in one circuit.

You also have a drain for the hood cowl that empties just about middle
of the tranny...

Re: Unknown fluid leak!

No it has not. I live in northern Illinois were we have no rain or
snow! It is oil. I am going to get a bottle of brake fluid and compare
the odor. I am baffled!!! Its right under the seat belt anchors on the
floor. They are soaked with oil. I have no idea where it would be
coming from. Thanks again everyone!

Re: Unknown fluid leak!

By the way, what function does the hood cowl drain serve. This is new
to me. I am learning a great deal on this forum and I love it. By the
way, just changed both differential fluids and did the transfer case
change as well. This from a guy who normally took all his stuff to
jerky lube. Never again! Thanks.

First thing I'd do is clean off all the oil and traces.

Driving along, even a small drip from the oil pan can wind up stuck
to the back bumper. I had a "teeny" leak in the transmission cooler
line (on the radiator).. had ATF fluid as far back as the trailer
hitch. :/

Drains off water that runs down the windsheld. The cowell is also where
the vents are for fresh air. On the ZJ if you lift the plastic covering
you can see the intakes. It's also a good place to put the alarm siren.

How old are you? Because if you are as old as Bill, Mike, Simon or me, you
could have tossed a bottle of oil back there, had it land on something
sharp, and promised yourself to clean it up "as soon as I get home".
