Tranny Leak!!
Hello
My son has a '97 TJ, 4 cylinder, 5 speed, and this afternoon, I noticed
what looked like a lot of lubricant on the pan under his
transmission/transfer case. I also know that a little oil can look like a
lot.
What I found: (please excuse the description, I don't know the real name
of the parts) On top of the transmission, where the shifter enters the
tranny, there is a plate that the shifter enters through. I could remove
all 4 bolts in this plate with my fingers. After tightening them down, I
feel pretty sure that I have found the cause of the leak. Although I don't
believe that a lot of lubricant was lost (although there was enough to put a
'shine' from blow back on the differential), I would really like to check
the level of the fluid. I can't find the fill plug. Does anyone know of a
GOOD picture on a web site that shows the location of the fill plug? The
picture in the haynes manual is of no use to me. Also, are there any other
areas that are known problems on this transmission for leaks? This is
definitely gear oil, not the transmission fluid that would be lost from the
transfer case.

It is also a good idea to clean the face of the plug to verify that it does
not have "Do Not Remove" stamped on it.

It is also a good idea to clean the face of the plug to verify that it does

Thanks for the help! I checked to fluid level, and it is only a little low.

That stuff is a last gasp effort to stop oil leaks. It swells seals up
and does stop the leak... for a while...
Then it is time for new seals, even the ones that weren't leaking....
