I tow a pop-up behind my TJ and use overdrive (5th gear) most of the
time. I only upshift when there's a slight grade or the engine acts like it's starting to lug a bit. Your XJ's 4.0L is a real torque-monster so until you get onto a grade, it should be fine in OD. I tow a pop-up behind my TJ and use overdrive (5th gear) most of the
time. I only upshift when there's a slight grade or the engine acts like it's starting to lug a bit. Your XJ's 4.0L is a real torque-monster so until you get onto a grade, it should be fine in OD. Most automatics are not as forgiving about towing in OD as a manual
and it should be mostly avoided in a XJ. Even more so if tires are bigger than stock. BTW, OD on a automatic is a taller ratio than OD on your manual is too and unlike your manual, the different clutch is used in OD which is not a strong as drive clutch.
