In my Honda Civic, the engine and gears were usually telling me to get back
on the street.

I generally avoid any gear in LO that's higher than 1st in HI. I've got
an AX15 (3.83:1, 2.33:1, 1.44:1, 1.00:1, 0.79:1) and the NP231 (2.72:1).
So, 3rd in LO is 3.93:1 which is pretty close to 1st in HI. I'll drive
3rd LO for a fair stretch if there's more rough stuff ahead. If all
ahead looks clear or if I feel the urge to put it in 4th, I stop and
shift to 1st HI.
With your 42RLE (2.84, 1.57, 1.00, 0.69) OD in LO is 2.76:1. I'd say if
you find you're crawling steady in 3rd LO, that's fine, but if you're
holding OD, its time for HI.
