He could have posted "'96 TJ, doors don't fit my CJ" Then posted in the message box, "what's wrong?" You would be perfectly fine with such a post, despite the fact that there is no such thing as a '96 TJ. Then all he would need do is sit around and wait for his post to percolate through the servers and pop up here. Or, he can post "Test -- Disregard" and pray to God that you disregard as he waits for it to appear on his screen. Give it a rest, and disregard any post that specifically asks you to disregard it. |

Absolutely not. You'll notice the OP has posted here previously, if he needs to ask a question, let him ask it. Adding "Disregard" to a test post doesn't make it acceptable any more than adding "Off Topic" to a post makes it on topic. Sorry, Jeff, netiquette is nothing more than common courtesy and should be followed, those who don't need to have their mistakes pointed out to them, that's how you learned manners when you were a kid and that's how people learn manners on Usenet, except of course, for the untrainable. ;-) Now let's both give it a rest, there were only two replies necessary in this thread, Stupendous Man's reply that alt.test should have been used and mine suggesting the OP just post his message. -- XS11E, Killing all posts from Google Groups The Usenet Improvement Project: http://blinkynet.net/comp/uip5.html |

Indeed, it expressely notifies other participants in the group that the topic does not follow that of the group. The group participants can then easily steer around such a post, and one can even go so far as to establish a Message Rule that deletes a message when "off topic" appears as a text string in a Subject Line. Doug has been posting here for close to ten years that I'm aware of. You, on the other hand, are a relative newcomer. A post that goes on for days about the accuracy of "'96 TJ <anything>" is a complete waste of bandwidth. Posting that "I'm not sure if this thing is on <tap, tap, tap>" and stating that it is something that you should not bother yourself with is better. He could have posted ANYTHING in his subject line that had the effect of being a test from his perspective, and not told us it was a test. Give it a rest and go ride your motorcycle. |
