I wish I still lived in San Diego. I used to love to wheel with the TDS
group. I got to be pretty good friend with the Holdens. Always great people. I'll drink a beer in honor of TDS this weekend. (OK so I drink beer every weekend but now I have another excuse.) Hey Rich,
Seeing as how you live in RI, I have an OT question. I'm looking at Johnson & Wales in Providence for culinary school - how's the wheelin' around there? I'm ok with a little travel, and my uncle has a large property in the middle of NH, but is there anything close by for quick trips? This could make or break my decision, so any info would help. Re: TDS Safari next weekend...
There are some spots to wheel in the area but they are in the northern part
of the state. Since Rude Island is such a huge state, an afternoon of offroading is not out of the question. I understand your desire to wheel, I miss the good stuff out west, but if you have the opportunity to go to Johnson and Wales, take it. I'm sure you know their reputation. If you get out here let me know, we can hook up and I'll show you some spots. I work with a couple guys who also wheel, we can make a round Rude Island offroad weekend or day. There is also a good jeep club in the area called Patriots jeep club. Good bunch of folks and they have some great runs in the area too. Your relative is in a great area for offroading. I personally don't know of anywhere up there, but if you find out let me know, I love that area up there. PS I call it Rude Island but its not that bad... Re: TDS Safari next weekend...
Thanks for the reply, that sounds about what I was expecting. I'm just
hoping for a few good trails to play around on every once in a while. My uncle has a cabin (complete with outhouse!) on about 150 acres near Wentworth, NH: http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=wl&q= I haven't been up there since I got into wheeling, but I know there are a lot of snowmobile trails and the like, so there have to be some good 4x4 trails, too. One of these days I'll head up there to visit the campus - I'll let you know when. Thanks Greg Rich wrote: > There are some spots to wheel in the area but they are in the northern part > of the state.
It caters to dune buggies and motorcycles and quads -- those sorts of vehicles. Anza Borrego Desert State Park is adjacent -- it actually surrounds Ocotillo Wells -- the offroad park, but it requires street legal machines to travel its routes. These routes include Pinion Mountain, which has Jeep Squeeze and Heart Attack Hill as two of its major attractions. You start the Pinion Mountain Trail from Highway S2 about 7 miles south of Scissors Crossing (the intersection of S2 and Highway 78), and proceed basically east from S2 over the mountain to Ocotillo Wells. You will come out on Split Mountain Road, whcih intersects Highway 78 at the Ocotillo Wells airport. Pinion Mountain Trail is a one-way. It has nearby attractions such as Diablo Drop Off and Fish Creek. Split Mountain is cool too. Another trail in Anza Borrego is Coyote Canyon. Coyote Canyon was the route that the Mormon Regiment used to sneak around the rear flank of the Mexican Army. The trail goes from the valley floor in the desert, and traverses up the canyon to Anza. Due to breeding issues with the Big Horn Sheep, the trail is now closed at the mid point, but the ride up is scenic and offers 4WD challenges, of particular interest is the Rock Garden just above the Lower Willows. The rock gardn has a real name, but it escapes me at the moment. It is a hillside that is strewn with boulders as the result of a washout that occured after heavy rains. I've had a ranger tell me I was at the end of the trail because we were at the bottom of the garden, my CJ5 with dual lockers crawled over the boulders to the top, much to the amazement of the ranger. Take the I-15 south to Temecula, and exit Highway 79 South (be careful NOT to exit 79 North). Follow 79 South to Warner Springs -- about 40 miles. Proceed about 8 miles to S2, and turn left. Follow S2 a few miles to S22, which will drop you down into Borrego Springs. Get a bite to eat at Carlees in Borrego Springs. Remain on S22 (take the exit from the traffic circle towards the Salton Sea, I'm pretty sure that is still S22, maybe it becomes S23) and proceed a few blocks to DiGigorio Street and turn left. This will take you into Anza Borrego State Park at the Coyote Canyon Trail. There is primitive camping in the area. From my house, I can make Coyote Canyon a day trip, but I think you should count on an over nighter. > ... |

Re: TDS Safari next weekend...
Many of their runs have gone on to the other side of Salt and Sea Way
over to the mud pot and Notch off the Pole Line Rd, and up to Devil's Slide, with lots of four wheelin' in-between. It's just that you don't climb out of the washes to a look out points, like in the Borrego Bad Lands. Too many TJs will be stuck making it one big parking lot to have any fun any way.
