Stuck Choke?
I have a 1984 Jeep Cherokee. It will start if a spray start fluid
into the Carburetor and then rev the engine for 5-10 minutes. After
it "warms up" it runs fine. Sometimes I can start the engine on a hot
day, without the starter fluid. If I do not use start fluid, and the
engine was not warm, then I must hold the choke open with a pencil
while someone else start the engine (also I have to spray some starter
fluid). How do I fix the choke?

The owners manual says the carb need a kit every time the engine needs
plugs....
A kit will fix the choke if that is a problem but it doesn't sound like
it. It is pretty much impossible to toss ideas at a 1984 carb without
knowing it's history.
Then if it 'only' acts up when it has sat for a while, I first suspect
the fuel filter might be in upside down. If this happens, the gas
siphons back to the tank when it sits so it airlocks the gas line and is
a real bitch to start without starting fluid. The filter has two
outlets, the center one to the carb and the 'top' one to the return
line. If the return line nipple isn't up top, your symptoms happen.
One other is a pinhole leak in the gas line, usually near the frame
where a clip holds the steel line and/or the flex lines to the tank or
pump in the front. A pinhole leak will only make a stain on the line or
near the clamp when it runs under vacuum, but it will let air in when it
sits which will cause your symptoms.
Some ideas for you,
