Strange intermitent starting issue

Sometimes, when I start my jeep, if it doesn't start the first time the
second time cranks but balks right in the middle and then continues to turn
over and starts. When this happens I loose all my radio settings like the
battery cable has been disconnected. This also happened one evening and I
believe I saw a flash coming from under my jeep. I can't recreate the
problem at will.
Anyone have any ideas on this one?
Thanks,
Bill

I had this problem on a wrangler. The starter was replaced, but that was not the
cure. It turned out to be the distributor. Oil was comeing up the shaft and
changing the timing. I replaced the dist. and retimed it with a light. No more

Take a good look at you engine ground strap.... mesh/braided wire
from the engine to the firewall. If the ground is non-conductive due
to breakage/corrosion you can get similat symptoms.
To avoid this problem I also run a 2/0 wire from the starter to the
battery groun connection.
Carefully go over ALL your battery to starter connections (including
ground wires!) looking for broken wires and corroded connectors, etc.

What is the year/model of your Jeep and what is the condition/age of the
battery cables?
