No reason at all. Highly reflective tape might actually be a better
idea, more likely to be recognized.

Kalifornia Gestapo will give you a no light ticket even on an antique
sports car that never had any such thing.

Are these the stock tail lights, or are they the part of the trick
diode replacement lights:

would be adequate if the light reflected was from at head light level.
