stalling on deceleration

I have an 86 CJ7 with the 258 and Carter BBD on it.

Here's my problem...

I am about to undertake a full carburetor rebuild today with care to
clean out those idle tubes and get all my settings right, but wanted to
make sure I was solving my biggest idling problem at the same time.

While my jeep struggles with cold mornings and idling in general, it
also stalls on deceleration or downhill and revs higher on uphill (when
idling). I originally thought it was a vacuum leak problem (which I
will be checking for today as well) but wanted to see if there was
another culprit I might be missing. One piece of advice suggested I
check the float level which I will during the rebuild. Anything else?

By the way, thanks to all the generous contributors on this group. I
am amazed at the time and thoughtfulness that goes into responses. For
me, a first time jeep owner (86 cj7), it has been a huge resource to
get me up to speed.

Re: stalling on deceleration

Deano,

Mike Romain has a fix for the idle tube problem he promotes, it was actually
a fix that Jeep used for a while that involves drilling out the tubes
because they are too small from the factory. After the 'fix' all you will
need in the way of maintenance is a carb rebuild every few years to replace
the rubber parts and reset the float. If I remember correctly you can
perform this fix while leaving the bulk of the carb installed.

Do a search on this newsgroup for "mike romain bbd fix" and I'm sure you
will find the procedure.

Re: stalling on deceleration

Thanks Billy. I definitely was planning to address the idle tube
issue, but wasn't sure that that would fix the quirky stalling problem
I also have (decel/downhill stall, uphill revving).

Any other thoughts?

Re: stalling on deceleration

If it isn't done already, you might want to consider the Nutter bypass mod
to eliminate the computer. Sounds like it is a big improvement.
