sporadic cruise control

sporadic cruise control
My cruise control has started acting up. Sometimes is works fine but
sometime (and getting more frequent) it turns on (the dashboard
indicator lights up) but won't allow me to set the speed. I push the set
button but the cc never kicks in.
Also, when it does set properly it will sometimes disengage when I hit a
bump in the road (not major bumps just typical Florida US 75 stuff).
It sorta seems that something has come out of adjustment but my Haynes
manual has no cruise control info.
Does anyone have any idea what is going wrong and how I can fix it?

Year, model?

Check the brake switch, going off when you hit a bump might mean the
switch is too touchy.
