Just now got this reply from one of the Teraflex retailers:

So whats so different about TJ that nobody seems to be making this gear? I
can get the 28-tooth gear from the dealer, but that doesn't solve my
problem of speedo accuracy.
Thanks.

Re: Speedo gear, which one?
The new gear will be smaller in diameter, so you'll need to clock
the off center housing: http://go.jeep-xj.info/HowtoSpeedoGears.htm to
meet the worm gear.

Re: Speedo gear, which one?
Before I spent money and time on a new gear, I would take a GPS unit and
verify my 'real' speed.
I went one size over the factory largest tire on my Cherokee and my
speedometer 'then' became exactly right on.
When I put 33's on my CJ7, the speedometer became correct, so things
vary...

verify my 'real' speed.
I went one size over the factory largest tire on my Cherokee and my
speedometer 'then' became exactly right on.
When I put 33's on my CJ7, the speedometer became correct, so things
vary...

Re: Speedo gear, which one?
Before I spent money and time on a new gear, I would take a GPS unit and
verify my 'real' speed.
I went one size over the factory largest tire on my Cherokee and my
speedometer 'then' became exactly right on.
When I put 33's on my CJ7, the speedometer became correct, so things
vary...

Re: Speedo gear, which one?
Bill, thanks for that. It does say that I can buy the long shaft 27-tooth
one and then pull the short shaft out of my existing one and transplant it
on the new one to make it a 27-tooth short shaft one. The only thing is
that this was the only site where it suggests a 26-tooth gear for 32 inch
tyres. Everybody else suggests a 27-tooth gear for both 31 and 32 inch
tyres.
