I was intriqued by this thread (but have NO experience in the desert)
However... you would think if these guys and girls can RACE 135 miles
through death valley in the summertime (masochistic tendencies aside),
surely someone with enough water can WALK a few miles to a road with
more traffic on it, no?

It would be tough for an unconditioned person in DV in the middle of
the summer. I would not do a solo trip to DV in the summer, but Joshua
Tree doesn't get that hot in the summer.

The desert is a dangerous place and most folks have no idea just how
much water you actually need to survive. I've hiked in the grand
canyon (it's hotter down in the canyon than most people think).
Moving on foot takes a lot more out of you then sitting behind
a wheel. And a lot of folks are simply not in good enough shape
to walk four miles on flat ground yet alone navigate shifting terrain
and washes.
It goes like this. Your walking in the heat, thinking your doing fine
but in reality loosing large amounts of water. Eventually you don't
feel so thirsty, then you feel tired, then your dead because your
heart can no longer pump the sludge that was once blood.
