If it's a CJ, I'd leave the rear seat in. I've napped in mine on long road
trips by sitting in the rear seat and putting my feet on the front
seat/center console.
The problem with just removing the seats is that the rear section sits
higher than the front. And unless you have a Scrambler, it's probably just
at the point that makes the whole experience miserable.

Unless you are qualified to be a Jockey,I think the back pain will make you
consider the practicality of buying a tent, air mattess, and sleeping bag.

Well 26 years in the army from private to colonel I had many hundreds, if
not thousands, of hours in Jeeps, including sleeping. Try to *not* do that.
Get a lean-to or a tent, get a cot, and an air mattress and a sleeping bag
and you will wake up as a normal person and not bent into the permanent "Z"
position. I could go on about the hard and cold floor, the smell of mogas,
etc. I live in the Sierra Nevada, have a Grand Cherokee and carry the tarp,
the sleeping bag, etc. But to each his own. Hopefully there is not two of
you! Well, hopefully there is two of you in which case don't even try
sleeping in a Jeep - unless you want a divorce.
