Rust repair, primers, bedliner and POR-15.
Hi folks
I have been stripping the rust off of my jeep for a couple of weeks now.
Now that I have it down to bare metal in some cases what would you
recommend as a good primer? Should I use Por-15 on all areas or just your
regular spray primer.
I am leaning towards spraying the whole thing...inside and out in one of
bed-liner products. Has anyone done this. Would you recommend it?
I also have a few rust spots in the read deck. My thought was to use Por-15
then cover with the bedliner.
Anyone else try this. How did it work out.

Just out of morbid curiosity, how many hours did you spend (almost)
getting this done? How much money? I'm curious because I just got a
part-time job at a blasting place and they do whole cars there in a few
hours for around $500, completely stripped using plastic media inside &
out to bare metal. Same thing with fiberglass bodies and it doesn't
damage it at all.
If you're really looking at bare metal with rust removed, I'd suggest
looking for a primer called "VersaPrimer". Some people also call it
Green Death because it's an acid etching primer that really digs into
the surface, but is not the easiest stuff to work with at home. POR
stands for "Paint Over Rust", so if you have surface rust you want to
cover, it's great for that. POR doesn't work well on bare smooth metal,
it just flakes off in big chunks. It actually requires a slightly rusty
or rough surface to adhere to metal.
Good luck,

Man! Don't even talk about the advantages of having a pro do the job vs. at
least my amateur attempts. <lol> When I put my lift on
http://www.monogramsinc.com/jeep/jee...spring-big.jpg
I did it myself, by myself, with some hand and air tools, a floor jack and some
really cheep floor stands. It took me close to 40 hours to do the job. Some
time later I was at one of the better 4 wheel drive shops in town and I asked
what the labor charge would have been for the job, $350 and they get the kits
installed in a day. By the time it was all said and done I "earned" about six
bucks an hour for my time and effort.
Dean
But I did get bragging rights.
