Six years ago Daimler switch to the New Venture 3550 manual
transmission, using their own oil or equivalent: http://www.pennzoil.com/products/gea...cro_fluid.html GL-5 is still recommended for their differentials Sulfur is a necessary evil of petroleum products, but if you want a heavy duty lube choose GL-5 as Mercedes: http://kenoanyag.mol.hu/english/prod...kkei/doc123807 A light duty lube such as GL-3 would be a good choice for a mall poser, as you. Re: RedLine MT-90 oil for manual transmission?
Hi Bill:
Thanks for posting that info ... but it's outdated. Chrysler recommended GL-3 in their earlier jeeps, then switched to GL-5 when that new spec came out. Afterwards, they learned that the sulfur and sulfite additives in GL-5 lubes are highly corrosive to brass synchro rings, which are found in the AX 5/15 trannies. Chrysler rescinded the GL-5 recommendation about 8 years ago, and has switched back to GL-3. Check with your dealer service dept ... they will verify it. Does anybody know if Redline MT-90 (synthetic, GL-4) has sulfur or sulfite additives? Thanks!! "L.W. Re: RedLine MT-90 oil for manual transmission?
Hi Bill:
Pennzoil synchromesh is not a GL-5, nor is the Daimler/chrysler oil. GL-5 is great for differentials, as you said, because they have no soft yellow metals. GL-3 fluids are better for manual trannies with brass synchros, because it has so much less sulfur & sulfite additives in it. Call your dealership service desk, they will verify it. Normal GL-5 dino oil is quite harmful to the AX 5/15 trannies. "L.W.
