RedLine MT-90 oil for manual transmission?
Ok ... I just found out some bad news, and I wanted some good advice.
I've got a '91 XJ, with an AX-15 manual tranny. It has brass synchro rings. The owner's manual calls for GL-5 gear oil. I just read that was a mistake ... they ran that info for about 2 years, then changed it to GL-3 oil. Turns out, the sulfur and sulfite additives in the GL-5 grade oil eat up the brass synchros. Anybody else heard that? What about redline MT-90? is that good? Will it do any damage? Thanks in advance ... any info would be appreciated ... even if it's not directly related ... :-) |

Re: RedLine MT-90 oil for manual transmission?
Redline MT-90 is ideal for the AX-5 and AX-15 transmission, I'm using it
in my own AX-15. You're right that GL-5 is not good for the synchros, the sulphur-based additives contained in most GL-5 lubes are harsh on soft yellow metals like brass. Robert Dyke wrote: > Ok ... Re: RedLine MT-90 oil for manual transmission?
P.S. Bill's webpage is outdated as it is still showing that GL-5 is
recommended for the AX-5/15. Chrysler rescinded that GL-5 recommendation probably 5-6 years ago, changing it as you said to GL-3 which does not contain the harmful additives present in GL-5. Six years ago Daimler switch to the New Venture 3550 manual
transmission, using their own oil or equivalent: http://www.pennzoil.com/products/gea...cro_fluid.html GL-5 is still recommended for their differentials Sulfur is a necessary evil of petroleum products, but if you want a heavy duty lube choose GL-5 as Mercedes: http://kenoanyag.mol.hu/english/prod...kkei/doc123807 A light duty lube such as GL-3 would be a good choice for a mall poser, as you. Re: RedLine MT-90 oil for manual transmission?
Hi Bill:
Thanks for posting that info ... but it's outdated. Chrysler recommended GL-3 in their earlier jeeps, then switched to GL-5 when that new spec came out. Afterwards, they learned that the sulfur and sulfite additives in GL-5 lubes are highly corrosive to brass synchro rings, which are found in the AX 5/15 trannies. Chrysler rescinded the GL-5 recommendation about 8 years ago, and has switched back to GL-3. Check with your dealer service dept ... they will verify it. Does anybody know if Redline MT-90 (synthetic, GL-4) has sulfur or sulfite additives? Thanks!! "L.W. Re: RedLine MT-90 oil for manual transmission?
Hi Bill:
Pennzoil synchromesh is not a GL-5, nor is the Daimler/chrysler oil. GL-5 is great for differentials, as you said, because they have no soft yellow metals. GL-3 fluids are better for manual trannies with brass synchros, because it has so much less sulfur & sulfite additives in it. Call your dealership service desk, they will verify it. Normal GL-5 dino oil is quite harmful to the AX 5/15 trannies. "L.W. Re: RedLine MT-90 oil for manual transmission?
I find it interesting after thinking about the possibility of
corrosion happening in a transmission bath in gear oil, so I Googled it: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...e+transmission and found nothing, but AMSOIL and other snake oils! Then they call the brass sync rings "yellow Metal" I guess for litigious reasons. Total Bullsh*t! Re: RedLine MT-90 oil for manual transmission?
Neither Redline's MTL nor MT-90 contain any of the harsh sulphur-based
additives, both are great for the AX-5. MTL for really cold areas, MT-90 for the rest of us. :) Jerry Robert Dyke wrote: > Hi Bill: > > Thanks for posting that info ... but it's outdated.
