Re: Red line on 258
IIRC, the stock Tach shows redline to be 4500 RPM on my '83 258. In
practice, any speed above about 2500 - 2700 RPM or so makes the motor sound
like the next rev will be its last !!

Re: Red line on 258
Hi Shamus,
I doubt Hesco was responsible for what Bill uses in camshaft
timing, duration, and lift, and the valve spring pressure which
establishes the safe rev limit before self destruct. I would establish
your rev limit by the seat of your pants, like watch the tachometer for
the point it would be closest to the next gears RPM to up shift. I would
say your stock lifters would collapse and the springs would float at
four grand. My small block roller runs valve springs at 350 pounds
closed to reach 6500 shift safely and if I had a limiter it would be set
at that in case I miss my power shift, I don't eat a valve. Eye ball the
specs of a couple of competition cams from the muscle era to get an idea
of how they breath at high RPMs:

Re: Red line on 258
The red line is 4500 on my stock tach and my CJ7 258 2 bbl with no
computer can turn almost there. I ran mine up to 4400 in second and it
topped over 50 mph. It ran into an rpm wall at 4400.
When I had the computer running things, 32-3500 was tops. It sounded
like it would explode any faster.
