Re: Wiring of Hella 500 Lights
It sounds like your Hellas are headlamp replacements, I was thinking the
original; poster had Hella offroad or fog lights that he wanted to install
in place of the factory fogs.
You can easily run Hella headlamp replacements and the factory fog lamps or
even Hella fog lamps all at the same time because these are separate
circuits. I don't know if the wiring harness will cause the lamps to burn
brighter, but I would be surprised.

I must be getting as bad as bill............I misread "driving".
I am running the "Euro" Hella headlamp replacements - was told that factory
wiring would work but that the Hellas were harder on the wiring & switch as
per a link on this NG - if you like I'll try to find the link & post it
again - not really all that important other than fyi

If it is a headlight replacement with higher wattage lights, relay them
with direct fused power.
The stock switch won't take the higher power on any vintage of Jeep and
most other vehicles too for that matter.
I have seen way too many switches smoke out from strong lights, way too
many.

Re: Wiring of Hella 500 Lights
In the last year of one contract I do for fleet mobile data systems
service, I had to wire three different vans with a jumper from the
battery to one headlight so they could do their midnight delivery run.
Two GM's and one Ford. Older Jeeps use GM switches...
That sure wasn't part of my job description, but the company sure liked
it and the owner/operator driver didn't have to rent a truck at 1:00 or
2:00 AM... 'Tips' were not uncommon for being able to do that for the
drivers either. ;-)
It was always from high watt lights and usually added driving lights
with no relays.
I even got tagged that way once with a 'new' vehicle. It had halogens
and the GM switch breaker decided to pop it's guts 50 miles from home
with empty road all the way. Thankfully there was a full moon and clear
skies...
