The speedometer gear housing was probably not rotated enough to ge
the
speedometer gear to mesh completely with the pinion gear that drive
it.
I'd pull the gear to check its condition and if it's ok, reinstal
it
and make sure to rotate the housing so the gear is fully engaged. Be
sure to match the speedo gear's tooth count with the index mark on th
housing
