Page 22-4 of my '97 TJ's Mopar factory service manual specifically
recommends cross-rotating and shows a diagram for cross-rotating tires.
When referring to Fig.6 on page 22-4 showing a cross-rotation pattern,
the Jeep factory service manual says "The suggested method of tire
rotation is (Fig. 6). Other rotation methods can be used, but they will
not provide all the tire longevity benefits."

At least the BFG, Goodyear, and Michelin's tire rotation patterns I use
are similar and all three of those brands recommend cross-rotation.
