OT local regs

my trip to montana (less than a week away now) will take me from north
carolina through virginia, west virginia, kentucky, indiana, illinois,
wisconsin, minnesota, north dakota, and then montana. im wondering if there
are any regulations that i need to be aware of concerning transporting
handguns and assault rifles through these states.
thanks!

Don't get caught?

I don't know, but the opportunity to be a smart ass was just too strong. I
think I would put them all in the back of your truck with the sofa and
chairs. Carry your ownership papers with you in the cab. Good luck, and
don't get caught.

Re: OT local regs

Nathan,

In WI, we have no conceal carry laws as of yet. Transportation of guns means
they must be FULLY cased. I have an Encore in an Uncle Mikes holster that
leaves the but end visible. That is illegal, so I transport it in a hard
sided.briefcase style. All must be unloaded and not readily accessible. For
more info, try the WI Legislature chapter 167.31 linked below.

Re: OT local regs

It all boils down to not getting caught...

On the other hand, if you really are worried about getting caught, pack them
away in something that is locked and not visible... The cops do not have the
right to search your car unless they are arresting you for something... In
actuality, they can't just do a search then, but they call it "inventorying"
your car... It's basically an illegal search, but it won't do you any good
to fight it... The gun laws are considerably different as you go across the
country... Personally, I believe that one should learn the laws so that they
know exactly which ones that they are breaking... When I go across country,
I carry since I have a Texas CHL... I don't care if the state that I'm in
recognizes the TX CHL or not... I tend not to have states that don't
recognize it as the destination for my trip, but some of the ones that I go
through might not recognize it... Then again, I'm only out of my car long
enough to get gas in these states...

Serious? Yeah, kinda. I think I would do as you are doing, packing my stuff
and moving from one state to another. It so happens that part of "my stuff"
includes an arsenal that small countries would be proud of. As long as you
are not engaged in a crime spree with your wife and kids in tow, I don't
think you have any real worries. When you get to your new home, it would be
wise to bone up on the local laws as they might apply to your arsenal, but I
really don't see any problems for you.

Since I would do as you are doing, good luck. Remember your 2nd Amendment
right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. Keep your stuff in the
back with the sofa and chairs, and you should be fine. Don't do anything
that would make anybody want to ask questions.

Re: OT local regs

Wisconsin is pretty strict about weapons in cars, and so are most of the states
east of the Mississippi.
Get caught here with anything loaded anywhere in your vehicle & go straight to
jail. They'll keep the gun, too.
Have a gun within reach (even under lock & key) and you got some fancy talking
to do to the already armed officers.
Keep your weapons locked in the back of the truck where you can't get at them.
Keep your ammo locked up as well.

Also, don't speed in Wisconsin. If you're from out-of-state and you get pulled
over, you must pay all fines right there on the side of the road, or you go to
jail right then & there. You'll see signs at our borders that say (big sign:)
"Wisconsin arrests drunk drivers" with a smaller sign under it that says "And
Speeders". They'll give you 10 mph in good weather, anything over that & they
have free reign to do whatever they like (within reason). Also, we have unmarked
squads here and our courts say it's OK for them to sit in the dark in an
unmarked car behind bushes running radar & bust you. When you get pulled over,
they have the right to search your car for any reasonable cause (like you're
acting or look suspicious). Seat belt rules are also strictly enforced,
probably even more so for out of state vehicles. Minnesota is very similar to
Wisconsin in most of these things.

Have a good trip!

Here in Minnesota, if you don't have a permit, it needs to be in a LOCKED
case, or places in the most distant portion of the vehicle, not in the pass
area. all magazines must be unloaded, and stored separate from ammunition.
(DNR calls a loaded mag, and a firearm, though separated, to be a loaded
firearm.)

Minnesota... the land where NOTHING is legal.

Avoid Mpls/St.Paul... I have heard a few horror stories about the local
constabulary, Besides, traffic is so buggered up even the locals must spend
hours lost amidst it!

rifle MUST be cased in the vehicle. When I moved here I was used to the
desert SW laws... I had my Ar-10T in a visible rack... and got to talk to
LOTS of state troopers... and I mean LOTS... as in auto-full load of
detectives. Eventually, I managed to convince them I was more-or-less
harmless... being a nationalised citizen didn't help the whole bloody mess
in the least. 4 hours later I got my armalite back, without a case I had to
disassm, and take home.

Jeff Gross is not kidding about Wisc... the mog actually got me a speeding

Shouldn't have a worry in WV or KY either.

Nathan - Just travel low-key and don't advertise you're traveling with
firearms (or any valuable for that matter). Avoid the big metropolitan
areas if possible, or at least don't stay the night around one if you are
doing a self-move with a truck. It's not the law you have to be most
concerned about while traveling, it's the thieves. Welcome to Montana (if
advance). Take your time and have a safe trip -- all 2200+ miles of it!

Re: OT local regs

I can speak on Virginia alone.

If you have a concealed carry permit the weapon can be anywhere you
want. If you don't have one then the weapons are supposed to be in plain
view and out of reach of the occupants. The ammo is not to be accesible
either. Really its kind of impossible to abide by thise rules. I carry
all my ammo in a locked box, military ammo box with combo lock on it(all
magazines and bolts in with the ammo). And just do my best keep it out
of reach.I would call each the ATF and ask how to get the regulations on
each state and make sure that you can legally have a certain weapon in
that state. If you can't then you can probably route around the state or
ship the weapons ahead.

Call the NRA or go on there website, i bet they can give you all the
info you need.

IMPORTANT!!!: if you are pulled over, roll down your window, stick both
hands out and tell the officer you are in the process of moving and have
weapons in the vehicle. That is the standard practice taught to me by
a cop.

Good luck
