Interesting, I associated sugar beats with sugarcane, like grows in
tropical climates. So like you would hibernate like the bears, in the
winter, or do they need care under all that snow? ;-)

Nope, it's a binnanual (two year) plant that has a root like a
ruhdabega, almost round, about 4" to 6" long. 16% sugar. Harvested after
the first frost, stored in HUGE (and smelly ) mounds until it can be
processed. Hard to figure out how such a nice sweet, pure product can
come from such an ugly plant. Red river valley between Minnesota and
North Dakota grows the things by the mega ton.
