FIVE people! On a MOTORcycle!! I've seen some "aggresive" driving here
and abroad but I'll tell you I've never seen ANYthing like India. Roads
that have a designation, ie, 2-lane, 3-lane, etc., well that is only for
general refernce. I've been on 2-lane roads that had no less than 4 or 5
lanes of traffic, and direction of travel was open to interpretation. Cars,
bikes, motorcycles, pedestrians, cows, pigs, and god knows what else all in
the road at once. I don't shake to easy but man the first time I was on the
road out there I was terrified that death was imminent. Surprisingly
though, of the time I've spent there I only saw one accident.
They aren't very big on "rules" over there as it pertains to road travel.
One of the funniest things I remember seeing were drivers delivering brand
new truck chassis. Long bed tri-axle trucks, the kind that are about half
way between 1-ton flatbeds and tractor trailers. I watched these guys
driving down the highway and it was nothing but a truck frame with a motor
and steering wheel. No bed, no body, nothing. They had pallets stacked up
on the frame with folding metal chairs strapped down across the whole mess
so they had someplace to sit while driving. I asked our driver about that
and he told me these guys had a 1000 miles or so to go to get where they
were going.
One other thing that travel abroad has taught me is that people here, no
matter HOW poor they think they are, haven't got a clue what bad really is.

ah. I saw that in mainland China too. One guy had a whole cows leg staked on
the back of his motorcycle... However I agree. India is one of the worst driving
places in the world.
